16 Days of Activism 2024: Amplifying Voices, Igniting Change

December 2, 2024

In a world where equality and justice remain aspirations for many, 16 Days of Activism 2024 emerges as a clarion call to challenge norms, break silences, and inspire action. Running from November 25 to December 10, this global campaign brings together communities, advocates, and organizations to spotlight the pressing issues of violence, inequality, and discrimination.

This year’s theme, “Amplifying Voices, Igniting Change,” resonates deeply as it emphasizes the power of collective action and the importance of every voice in building an equitable society.

Why 10 Days of Activism Matters

The campaign marks a critical moment to:

  • Address Gender-Based Violence (GBV): Globally, 1 in 3 women experiences physical or sexual violence in her lifetime. In Uganda, GBV continues to affect women and girls disproportionately, demanding urgent attention.
  • Promote Inclusivity: Activism creates space for marginalized voices—women, children, people with disabilities, and minority communities—to be heard and included in decision-making.
  • Catalyze Change: Grassroots movements born during activism periods often lead to policy changes, community interventions, and societal shifts.

WLEDE’s Commitment to Activism

At WLEDE, our mission aligns seamlessly with the objectives of this global campaign. We use these 10 days to amplify the voices of women and girls, mobilize communities, and push for systemic change through focused activities:

  1. Community Dialogues:
    • Hosting open discussions in rural areas to raise awareness about GBV and the resources available to survivors.
    • Engaging local leaders to champion change and enforce anti-violence measures.
  2. Policy Advocacy Campaigns:
    • Collaborating with policymakers to draft gender-sensitive laws and allocate resources for implementation.
    • Highlighting the importance of enforcing existing laws on domestic violence, child marriage, and sexual harassment.
  3. Youth Empowerment:
    • Organizing workshops for young men and boys to promote positive masculinity and challenge harmful gender norms.
    • Engaging youth in creating art, music, and digital content to spread awareness about equality and non-violence.
  4. Digital Activism:
    • Leveraging social media platforms to run campaigns like #IgniteChange2024 and #AmplifyVoices to spark global conversations.
    • Sharing survivor stories, resources, and actionable tips for allies to combat violence.
  5. Lighting the Path to Safety:
    • Partnering with local organizations to establish safe spaces for survivors of GBV, providing counseling, legal aid, and support services.

Stories of Impact

Anna’s Triumph: A 17-year-old girl from Lira found refuge and hope after attending one of WLEDE’s GBV sensitization workshops. With newfound confidence, she stood up to forced marriage and now mentors other girls in her community.

A Village Transformed: After engaging in WLEDE’s community dialogues, leaders in Ogur Sub-County enforced stricter by-laws to protect women and girls from domestic violence, creating a ripple effect of safety and awareness.
