In 2018 Women in Leadership Development AVSI Foundation and Nile Forestry Agro embarked on implementing Enhancing Green Opportunity (EGO project) a 3-year project funded by European Union (EU). With the aim of leveraging technical expertise, operational strengths and financial resources needed in addressing/facilitating innovative to solve the identified problems in the green job marketing. The project targets 1800 women and young people in Lira District (720 women between 35 to 65 years and 1080 young people 14 to 35 years), 24 District Local Government staffs, 4 Agribusinesses and 4 Agriculture Skills Providers running from January 2018 – December 2020 in Lira Municipality, Aromo and Ogur sub Counties with the effort of transforming green economy to the key driver of development and sustainable green employment for young people and women in Lira District through private sector engagement.
There has been a decrease in the UVI levels in the area (The UVI is a measure of the level of UV radiation. The values of the index range from zero upward – the higher the UVI, the greater the potential for damage to the skin and eye) [1] , the levels have gone down for the entire Lira District .from an annual high of 20 in 2108 to an annual high of 16 I 2020.[2]
And most notably, the amount of rainfall in the district has not only increased but surpassed its neighbors specifically to the north where the project implementation areas were situated[3] as shown by the table below.
And just two years since the culmination of the successful project, the fruits of what we sowed are not only visible to the naked eye but felt in the atmosphere. The tree plantations made in a number of project areas of Aromo and Ogur have matured into beautiful strong trees of impact. They have gone on to not only create fruits and shade for the beneficiary communities but also some significant changes in the climate of the area as observed amongst its neighbours.
