The Ministry of Water and Environment has handed over the Shs 28 billion Tochi Irrigation scheme in the Acaba Sub-county in Oyam district to farmers under the Tochi Irrigation Cooperative Society. The construction of the Shs 28 billion irrigation scheme to promote rice growing, and improve food security and fishing started in 2016 with funding from the African Development Bank [AfDB].
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the resident district commissioner, Mr. William Komakech called upon the communities to utilize the irrigation project to fight poverty in their households. The irrigation scheme is set to directly benefit over 1,000 farmers from Acaba, Minakulu, Oyam town council, and Ngai sub-counties who are predominantly women and indirectly benefit over 2000,000 people in the Lango region.
