Every year on March 8, the world comes together to celebrate International Women’s Day. It is a moment to honour the achievements of women, reflect on the challenges they continue to face, and renew our commitment to building a more equal world.
For Women Leadership Development (WLEDE), this day is especially meaningful. Our work is grounded in a simple belief: when women are empowered to lead, communities grow stronger. Across Uganda, women continue to shape families, economies, and local leadership with resilience, determination, and hope.
The 2026 Theme
The theme for International Women’s Day 2026 calls for stronger action to ensure rights, justice, and opportunity for all women and girls. It reminds us that gender equality requires more than words—it requires sustained commitment, partnership, and investment in women’s leadership.
At WLEDE, this vision aligns closely with our mission to strengthen women’s participation in leadership, governance, and community development.
Progress Since Last Year
Over the past year, WLEDE has continued to walk alongside women and youth leaders across Uganda, supporting them to grow, lead, and participate in shaping their communities.
Some of the key milestones include:
- Strengthening women’s leadership and civic participation, particularly during the 2026 electoral period through mentorship, training, and engagement.
- Supporting women entrepreneurs and vendors, amplifying their voices and advocating for fair and inclusive economic opportunities.
- Expanding community engagement programs that empower women and youth to participate in governance and local decision-making.
- Deepening partnerships with civil society and development partners to promote gender equality and sustainable development.
Behind every milestone are powerful stories—women finding their voice, young leaders stepping forward, and communities beginning to see the value of inclusive leadership.
Looking Ahead
While progress has been made, many women still face barriers to economic opportunity, leadership, and equal participation in society. That is why WLEDE remains committed to building a future where every woman and girl has the chance to lead, thrive, and contribute to the development of her community.
A Shared Responsibility
This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the strength, courage, and achievements of women everywhere. We also invite partners, communities, and supporters to stand with us.
Because when women rise, communities prosper, democracy strengthens, and the future becomes brighter for all.
