Honoring International Human Rights Defenders: A Call to Action

December 10, 2024

On this year’s International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, the spotlight is on the resilience, contributions, and challenges faced by women who stand at the forefront of human rights advocacy. Observed on November 29, the day amplifies the voices of Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) who tirelessly work to combat injustice, inequality, and discrimination despite numerous obstacles.

The theme, “Honoring She Defenders: Recognizing Resilience, Achievements, and Empowerment of Women Who Champion Human Rights,” emphasized the dual vulnerabilities faced by WHRDs—both as women and as advocates in a patriarchal system. These defenders confront stigmatization, violence, and underfunding, particularly in Uganda, where harmful anti-gender narratives and online harassment remain significant challenges.

Organizations such as the National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders Uganda (NCHRD-U) have been pivotal in addressing these issues. Through initiatives like regional coalition networks and protection funds, they support WHRDs at risk while advocating for a legal framework to safeguard their work. They also called upon governments, civil society, and stakeholders to prioritize legal, financial, and psychosocial support for these defenders.

Prominent advocates like Thelma Awori and Dorothy Kiyai highlighted the critical role of WHRDs in fostering social justice, urging the global community to recognize and protect their efforts. The establishment of safe spaces, better funding mechanisms, and laws ensuring their protection were among the key recommendations to ensure WHRDs can continue their invaluable work.

The campaign underscores a universal truth: the fight for human rights cannot be won without the relentless courage of WHRDs. Their efforts are a cornerstone for equality, freedom, and the advancement of human dignity globally.
