The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to face one of the most protracted humanitarian crises in the world, driven by conflict, instability, and displacement. As violence escalates in the eastern regions, thousands of families are being forced to flee their homes, crossing into neighboring countries, including Uganda. Among those affected, women and children bear the brunt of the suffering, enduring unimaginable hardships as they seek safety and basic necessities.
Impact on Women and Children as Refugees
For women and children fleeing the DRC, the journey to safety is perilous and fraught with challenges. Many arrive in refugee settlements across Uganda, including in the Rwenzori region, with little more than the clothes on their backs. Their plight is exacerbated by limited access to food, clean water, healthcare, and shelter.
Women’s Vulnerabilities:
Displacement often leaves women vulnerable to gender-based violence (GBV), exploitation, and abuse. In refugee settlements, the lack of privacy and adequate security increases the risk of physical and sexual violence. Moreover, many women face the additional burden of providing for their children and families in these precarious circumstances.
Children’s Challenges:
Children, who make up a significant portion of the displaced population, face the risk of malnutrition, interrupted education, and psychological trauma. Many are separated from their families, leaving them vulnerable to child labor, trafficking, and other forms of exploitation.
WLEDE’s Work in the Rwenzori Region
At WLEDE, we are deeply committed to supporting the most vulnerable populations, especially women and children, during times of crisis. Our work in the Rwenzori region, a key entry point for refugees from Congo, focuses on empowering women and fostering community resilience. Through partnerships with local organizations like Kaplanet, we strive to create sustainable solutions for displaced families.
A Call to Action
The situation in Congo and its ripple effects on Uganda’s refugee-hosting regions demand urgent attention and sustained action. Women and children should not have to endure cycles of violence and neglect. At WLEDE, we call on governments, humanitarian organizations, and individuals to join us in providing hope and tangible support to these communities. Together with Kaplanet and other partners, we remain steadfast in our mission to build a future where all women and children can thrive, free from fear and deprivation.
