Muslim women in Uganda have faced significant challenges in overcoming societal perceptions that limited their roles in leadership and community decision-making. Despite these obstacles, their determination has led to remarkable progress. This progress will be celebrated with the inauguration of the National Muslim Women Council, scheduled for October 2024. This council marks a pivotal moment in empowering and elevating the voices of Muslim women across the country.
Hajjat Sophia Safina Kenyangi, Chairperson of the Council, has been instrumental in advancing the inclusion of women in leadership within the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC). Her relentless advocacy has created opportunities for Muslim women to participate at all levels of decision-making, symbolizing a broader shift towards gender inclusion in the Muslim community.
President Yoweri Museveni is expected to attend the event, supporting the efforts of the UMSC to further empower Muslim women. The Council aims to address key issues affecting Muslim women and provide a platform for leadership, advocacy, and community development.
As we prepare for this historic event, we extend our deepest gratitude to Hajjat Kenyangi and all the pioneering women who made this achievement possible. The National Muslim Women Council represents not only a significant step for Muslim women but also a brighter future for leadership, equality, and progress in Uganda.
