“Census of the street vendors and hawkers in Mankidye and Nakawa divisions of Kampala District“
In 2019 WLEDE in partnership with Platform for Vendors in Uganda PLAVU, successfully conducted a census of the street vendors and hawkers in Mankidye and Nakawa divisions of Kampala District and analyzed the legal framework governing the city operations to promote mutual working relationship in the city.
- The estimated number of street vendors and hawkers in the two divisions was ascertained and has supported KCCA, Uganda Police and Min of Education in planning and providing social services and markets.
- A Management Information System (MIS) for registering all vendors was developed and operational. Vendors have continued registering with PLAVU and that has improved the coordination of their activities and cohesion of their voice to the concerned.
- The laws, ordinances and bye laws governing the operations of the city were analyzed and recommendations made to the concerned authorities. Amendment process of the Maintenance of Law and Order Ordinance 2006 began in 2019 and still going on with Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) consultations of all stakeholders including PLAVU and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
KCCA demarcated part of Luwum Street for vendors to sell their goods on Sundays when the shops are closed
